RN - PeriOp - Outpatient Surg Ctr - Days - Mount Nittany, State College


1) Assesses and responds to the individual physical, psychosocial, anq spiritual needs of the patient through personal observation and interaction. Acts as a patient advocate.

2) Utilizes professional nursing skills and judgment; takes action to implement nursing care and treat the problems identified.

3) Communicates patient assessments to the appropriate individuals ensuring the coordination of patient care.

4) Demonstrates knowledge of diagnostic measures such as labs, radiology, EKG. Demonstrates skills, in IV therapy.

5) Transcribes and implements physicians' orders in an accurate and timely manner while admitting patient to the surgical center efficiently.

6) Documents in the patient clinical records via computer with accuracy and in a timely manner. Checks the required information on the patient record to comply with the correct surgical procedures. Completes final review of patient record to ensure all paperwork and activities such as site marking is complete and that anesthesiologist has spoken to the patient and family.

7) Provides appropriate and knowledgeable instruction/education to the patients and their families.

8) Decrements supplies according to policy. Utilizes supplies, equipment, and resources to contain costs without compromising patient care.

9) Assists with housekeeping duties such as cleaning and making beds as needed for patients.

10) When assigned to PACU, uses knowledge and critical thinking to assess and give appropriate nursing care. Recognizes patients' needs; maintains airway, monitors VS, utilizes correct medication to control pain, and consults with surgeon and anesthesiologist if any difficulties arise that affects the patient. Evaiuates patient's status using discharge criteria to safely move patient onto Phase 2.

11) Is familiar with the transfer process and procedure to send a patient to the medical center.

12) When functioning as a float nurse, maintains communications between all areas and is available to assist staff as needed to maintain flow; relieves staff for breaks and lunch in a timely manner and utilizes staff in a cost effective manner.

13) Works as assigned in the pain management and eye laser procedure rooms.

14) Familiar with anesthesia supplies; assists with nerve blocks; knows location of crash cart, MH cart, and medications that may be needed in an emergency.

15)Participates in committee meetings, offers suggestions for improvements, and seeks guidance and direction when needed.

16)Other duties as assigned.
