Travel surgical technologist in a Colorado operating room
The Role

Travel Surgical Technologist

As a travel surgical technologist with We Care Staffing, you'll be the backbone of the operating room: preparing sterile fields, setting up instruments and equipment, anticipating the surgeon's next move, passing instruments, maintaining the sterile environment, and helping count and account for every item before closing. Good surg techs keep cases moving and surgeons calm, and experienced travelers who can walk into an unfamiliar OR and perform from day one are in constant demand.

Our Colorado surgical technologist contracts span general surgery, orthopedics, cardiovascular, neuro, OB (C-sections), and outpatient surgery centers. Tell your recruiter which service lines you've scrubbed, and you'll be matched to cases that fit your experience.

Responsibilities

What You'll Do

  • Prepare sterile fields and set up instruments and equipment for surgical procedures
  • Anticipate the surgeon's next move and pass instruments efficiently
  • Maintain the sterile environment throughout each procedure
  • Help count and account for every item before closing
  • Keep cases moving and surgeons calm under pressure
  • Support the OR team across general surgery, orthopedics, cardiovascular, neuro, and OB
Requirements

What You'll Need

  • Colorado surgical technologist registration (DORA) plus CST certification per facility requirements (see below).
  • CST certification (NBSTSA) preferred and required by many facilities
  • A minimum of 1 year of recent OR experience (most facilities prefer 2 or more)
  • BLS certification
  • Strong sterile technique and instrument knowledge across your service lines
  • Calm, focused communication under OR pressure

Why CO Surg Techs Earn More

Why Surgical Techs Choose Colorado

Colorado's surgical market punches above its size: a dense Front Range hospital corridor, one of the country's busiest orthopedic scenes (ski injuries are a year-round pipeline on their own), and outpatient surgery centers expanding across Denver's suburbs.

We Care Staffing's current Colorado surg tech contracts pay up to $2,400 per week on a 12x3 schedule with varied shifts, comfortably above the typical national travel surg tech range. For context, the national median for the profession is $62,830 per year per BLS May 2024 data, which makes the travel premium easy to see.

Pay & Benefits in Colorado

Weekly pay on this contract blends taxable wages with tax-free stipends for housing and meals, provided you maintain a qualifying tax home under IRS rules. Because stipend ceilings track GSA per diem rates by location, ask your recruiter for the full package breakdown rather than comparing contracts on the headline number alone.

Colorado has a flat state income tax of about 4.4%. For benchmarking: Surgical technologists earn a national median of $62,830 per year per BLS May 2024 data, and certified techs (CST) typically earn 12 to 18% more. Travel contracts typically exceed staff equivalents once tax-free stipends are counted, and the figures above give you the floor to negotiate from.

Licensing

Credentials & Licensing in Colorado

Colorado requires surgical technologists to register with the state through DORA, the Department of Regulatory Agencies, and most facilities require or prefer CST certification from the NBSTSA on top of it. Registration is straightforward compared with full licensure, so complete it early and it should never delay a start date. Confirm current requirements with your recruiter at offer time.
