Travel surgical technologist in a Montana operating room
The Role

Travel Surgical Technologist

As a travel surgical technologist with We Care Staffing, you'll be the backbone of the operating room: preparing sterile fields, setting up instruments and equipment, anticipating the surgeon's next move, passing instruments, maintaining the sterile environment, and helping count and account for every item before closing. Good surg techs keep cases moving and surgeons calm, and experienced travelers who can walk into an unfamiliar OR and perform from day one are in constant demand.

Our Montana surgical technologist contracts span general surgery, orthopedics, cardiovascular, neuro, OB (C-sections), and outpatient surgery centers. Tell your recruiter which service lines you've scrubbed, and you'll be matched to cases that fit your experience.

  • Anticipate the surgeon's next move and pass instruments efficiently
  • Maintain the sterile environment throughout each procedure
  • Help count and account for every item before closing
  • Keep cases moving and surgeons calm under pressure
  • Support the OR team across general surgery, orthopedics, cardiovascular, neuro, and OB

What You'll Need

  • CST certification (NBSTSA) per facility requirements; Montana does not require separate state licensure for surgical technologists (see below).

  • BLS certification
  • Strong sterile technique and instrument knowledge across your service lines

Why MT Surg Techs Earn More

Why Surgical Techs Choose Montana

Montana's surg tech rates surprise people: with a small resident workforce and regional referral centers running full OR schedules, facilities here regularly pay travel rates that beat coastal markets. We Care Staffing's current Montana contracts reach $2,800 per week, among the strongest surg tech rates on our board.

Compare that with the national median for the profession ($62,830 per year per BLS May 2024 data) and the math is simple: a Montana travel contract can out-earn a staff year in many states, with varied 12x3 scheduling and four days a week to spend in Big Sky country.

Pay & Benefits in Montana

Weekly pay on this contract blends taxable wages with tax-free stipends for housing and meals, provided you maintain a qualifying tax home under IRS rules. Because stipend ceilings track GSA per diem rates by location, ask your recruiter for the full package breakdown rather than comparing contracts on the headline number alone.

Montana has a graduated state income tax with a top rate of 5.9%. For benchmarking: Surgical technologists earn a national median of $62,830 per year per BLS May 2024 data, and certified techs (CST) typically earn 12 to 18% more. Travel contracts typically exceed staff equivalents once tax-free stipends are counted, and the figures above give you the floor to negotiate from.

Licensing

Credentials & Licensing in Montana

Montana does not license surgical technologists at the state level, so your CST certification from the NBSTSA and documented OR experience are what facilities evaluate. No state licensing wait means starts here can move quickly once facility credentialing clears. Confirm individual facility requirements with your recruiter.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

How much do surgical technologists make in Montana?
We Care Staffing's current Montana surgical tech contracts pay up to $2,800 per week on a 12x3 (36-hour) schedule. Travel packages combine taxable hourly pay with tax-free stipends for qualifying travelers, so weekly value typically exceeds staff equivalents.
Why do Montana surg tech contracts pay so much?
Supply and distance. Montana's resident surg tech workforce is small, its referral centers run full surgical schedules, and recruiting techs to relocate permanently is hard. Facilities solve it with strong travel rates, which is why Montana contracts on our board reach $2,800 per week.
What is a 12x3 schedule?
Three 12-hour shifts per week, totaling 36 hours, the standard full-time hospital schedule. Three days on, four days off.
Does We Care Staffing help with housing in Montana?
Most travelers take the tax-free housing stipend, which follows GSA rates for your assignment city, and choose their own housing. Our team shares vetted travel housing resources for Billings and the state's other markets.
What shifts are available for surgical technologist jobs in Montana?
Current contracts offer Varied shifts on a 12x3 schedule. Night and weekend coverage often carries differentials; ask your recruiter which facilities are paying them.
