What experience contracts ask for
Facilities set their own requirement, and 1 to 3 years in the specialty is the figure most of them ask for. What they are really asking is whether you have done the work recently, on a unit like theirs, at the acuity they run.
That is why the skills checklist matters more than the resume. Two nurses with the same number of years can be submitted for very different contracts depending on what they have actually been doing this year.
If you are moving between specialties, or coming back after time away, say so at the start. It changes which contracts are realistic, and it is a much better conversation before a submission than after one.
Licensing and the Nurse Licensure Compact
If your home state is a member of the Nurse Licensure Compact, a multistate license lets you work in other compact states without applying separately. Most states are now members.
The part that catches people out is the gap between a state enacting the compact and actually implementing it. Massachusetts enacted it in November 2024, but implementation is not complete, so nurses still need a Massachusetts license to work there today.
Compact membership changes, so check the current position with the National Council of State Boards of Nursing before you rely on it. We will confirm where you stand for the states you want before you agree a start date, and we handle the application with you if you need one.

Specialty is the largest single factor in what an RN contract pays. A cath lab or CVOR nurse and a med surg nurse working the same week in the same building are usually on very different rates, and the gap widens further in states that struggle to recruit.

How much experience do RN contracts ask for?
Most facilities ask for 1 to 3 years in the specialty. Recency matters as much as the total, so a nurse who left ICU four years ago will be looked at differently from one who left last month.
Which states can I work in with a compact license?
A multistate license covers you in other compact states without a separate application. Membership changes, and some states have enacted the compact without implementing it yet, so check the current list with the National Council of State Boards of Nursing. We will confirm the position for your states before you commit to a start date.
Can you help me get licensed in another state?

Can I take a contract in a specialty I have not worked in recently?
It depends how long ago and how the facility has written the requirement. Tell a recruiter what your recent experience actually is rather than what is on your resume, and they will tell you which contracts are realistic.
