LPN or LVN?
They are the same license. Texas and California call it licensed vocational nurse, everywhere else calls it licensed practical nurse, and the training and scope are equivalent. If you trained as an LVN in California and want to work in Ohio, you are applying for LPN roles.
We use both terms on this page because both are used in practice, and a recruiter will not care which one is on your license. Vocational nurse jobs and practical nurse jobs are the same jobs.
Where you work shapes the job
Where LPNs and LVNs work
Long term care
Skilled nursing, assisted living, rehabilitation and subacute. This is where most LPN contract work sits.
Home health
Visiting and private duty nursing, often one patient at a time and often paid per visit rather than per hour.
Clinics and outpatient
Physician offices, urgent care, dialysis, infusion and specialty clinics. Usually daytime hours with no weekends.
Correctional health
Prisons and jails. Frequently overlooked by candidates and persistently hard for facilities to staff.
Hospitals
Still hiring LPNs in many states, though some acute systems have moved to all RN staffing. Worth asking rather than assuming.
Other settings
Hospice, behavioral health, pediatrics, schools, occupational health and vaccination clinics.
What you can do depends on the state
IV therapy, blood draws, patient assessment, medication administration by certain routes and supervision of aides are permitted for LPNs in some states and restricted in others. Your board of nursing decides, not the employer.
It matters when you take work in a new state, because a task you have done routinely for years may sit outside scope there, or may need a separate certification. Your board of nursing sets the rules, and we will tell you what applies before you accept an assignment.
Licensing and the Nurse Licensure Compact
Practical and vocational nurses are covered by the Nurse Licensure Compact, which is a point a lot of LPNs do not realise. It is often written about as a registered nurse arrangement, and the LPN and VN multistate license works the same way.
Two things catch people out. The multistate license belongs to whichever state you call home, so relocating changes what you hold. And a state can pass the compact without switching it on, in which case you still apply there as normal. Check the current position with the National Council of State Boards of Nursing. We will confirm it for your states before anything is agreed.
What experience contracts ask for
Most contracts ask for 1 to 3 years in the setting, and setting matters more than total years here. A year in skilled nursing and a year in a clinic are not interchangeable, because the pace, the paperwork and the supervision are different.
What moves the rate
What LPN and LVN roles pay
Setting moves LPN pay more than anything else. Correctional health and dialysis typically sit above skilled nursing, and home health paid per visit works out differently again depending on how many visits you can fit into a day.

Travel, contract and permanent
All three work patterns are open to LPNs and LVNs. Contract work is especially common here, because long term care facilities cover short notice gaps week to week and often build a regular roster out of the same few nurses.

Is an LVN the same as an LPN?
Yes. Texas and California use licensed vocational nurse, and the rest of the country uses licensed practical nurse. The training and the scope are equivalent, so an LVN moving to another state applies for LPN roles.
Can I work in another state on my license?
Often, yes. The compact is not registered nurse only, and the LPN and VN multistate license works the same way. What decides it is which state you call home, because that is where your multistate license is issued from. Are LPN and LVN jobs mostly in nursing homes?
A lot of them are, because long term care is where most LPN contract work sits. It is not the only option though. Clinics, home health, correctional health and outpatient hospital departments all take LPNs, and the pace and hours differ a great deal between them.
How much experience do LPN contracts ask for?
